Tournament Preview: One Eye On Vannes

12.06.2013EUROBASKET WOMEN 2013
Birsel Vardarli quicks around the court will be a key asset for Turkey
We take a look at the Group A and B action due to unfold in Vannes, as eight contenders seek to punch their respective tickets for the second phase in Lille.
Turkey have been installed as group favourites and ultimately, will be seeking successive medals after taking silver in 2011. Underwhelming preparation results culminated in a 0-3 record at their final warm-up tournament, but this will be forgotten should they have a winning start once the main event begins.
With Nevriye Yilmaz and Quanitra Hollingsworth going to work inside, they will be tough to deal with in the paint. The backcourt will be expertly patrolled by the silky skills of the lightning fast Birsel Vardarli, whilst the likes of Saziye Ivegin provides the necessary glue to hold everything together.
Montenegro will do well to match their brilliant start in Poland when they rolled for six successive wins. However, with a nicely balanced feel to their team, they may just be able to pull it off.
The backcourt includes Jelena SkerovicAnna DeForge and Snezana Aleksic, whilst their frontcourt rotation is also strong. They can rely upon Iva PerovanovicAna Turcinovic and Milka Bjelica, whilstJelena Dubljevic will hopefully stave off the back trouble which has plagued her recently.
Anything is possible for Ukraine with FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year Alina Iagupova. All eyes will be on her dazzling skills, especially when launching her trademark triples with a mesmerising sky-high trajectory.
Lucia Kupcikova holds the key to success for the Slovak Republic
Meanwhile, Inna Kochubei offers stability and organisation at point guard and Oleksandra Kurasova is a quality player, who offers a balanced inside-outside game in the forward spot.
Fellow underdogs Slovak Republic arrived without a host of key names, but they showed last summer that writing them off would be foolish and maybe they can also spring an upset.
Small forward Lucia Kupcikova is the unassuming team leader and whilst a potential lack of scoring power is a concern, playmaker Gabriela Kubatova will do everything possible to address this. Anna Jurcenkovaand Romana Vynuchalova will rebound solidly and Katerina Tetemondova will hope to extend her terrific domestic form with MBK Ruzomberok to the national level.

Labelled as the obligatory ‘Group of Death,' reigning champions Russia headline Group B. New head coachAlfredas Vainauskas is without the legendary Maria Stepanova and fellow veterans Svetlana Abrosimova,Olga Arteshina and Rebekkah Hammon; not to mention EuroBasket Women 2011 MVP Elena Danilochkina, who is unable to participate due to personal reasons.
The onus is on new naturalised option Epiphanny Prince. After an injury on debut in a warm-up game, it initially looked like she would not be travelling to France but more recent news out of the Russian camp is that Prince has overcome the injury and is now on board.
There will still be vast experience with the unmistakable presence of Ilona Korstin and center Irina Osipova, but defending their title will be tough if history alone is anything to go by.
Spain have a new head coach in Lucas Mondelo, but still have a host of famous women's basketball faces on their roster, including Amaya ValdemoroLaia PalauElisa Aguilar and Sancho Lyttle
In an inexperienced Italian line-up, Giorgia Sottana has major expectation upon her shoulders
Coach Mondelo has handed out some senior debuts to a new generation in Queralt Casas and Laura Gilwho inject some youth, but it's likely to be the respective contributions of point guard Siliva Dominguezand Alba Torrens which could determine whether they can challenge for the podium again.
Sweden were last at a Final Round during the eighties and will be hoping to make the most of their return. They had a stunning qualification campaign to top the group and even beat Spain twice in a rivalry soon to be resumed.
They have dynamic sister combo Frida and Elin Eldebrink in the backcourt; two big ‘X-Factors' inElizabeth Egnell and the recently naturalised Ashley Key; as well as Louice Halvarsson under the hoop. Expectations are relatively high, but in a tough group, they will have to bring their top form to progress.
A new-look Italian team put seven straight victories in the books to top their group in qualification and after making sizeable changes last summer, head coach Roberto Ricchini has followed this up by selecting a young and inexperienced team for the tournament with nine players set to debut.
He cut Chiara Consolini who many thought would be included due to her EuroLeague Women experience, meaning playmaker Giorgia Sottana will be the pivotal figure for the Azzurre, whilst Raffaella Masciadriand Benedetta Bagnara will have to find their range from three-point land to shoot their team to Lille
